About:

Radiation Dosimetry Research Group was organized by Professor Miri Hakimabad (Leader) and Dr Rafat Motavalli (Co-leader) in 2007. Our research group currently consists of three research assistants, and four students. In general we are interested in computational methods for quantifying ionizing radiation in human body. In this respect, Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations using codes such as MCNP, MCNPX, and Geant4 are integral to our research. Apart from computational methods, our work centered about application of these calculations to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in which the human body exposes to ionizing radiation such as radiation therapy. We accomplished internal and external organ dose calculations for various reference phantoms in different situations. Our group has developed several computational human phantoms and performed Monte Carlo simulations for different radiation exposure scenarios. Our current projects involve optimizing the delivered dose to the thyroid gland in the treatment of hyperthyroidism through modification of administered activity of radioiodine. We simultaneously pursue our research in simulation of radiation interactions with DNA to assess the biological consequences of radiation exposure.
