The need for restructuring the bibliographic record:
To overcome the problems concerning knowledge organization and representation in current online catalogs it is necessary to define a new structure for the bibliographic record.
Restructuring should be based on a knowledge approach and should fulfill the functional definition of knowledge (as compared to data and information).
Data is a fact represented as an item or event out of context and with no relation to other things (Example: individual data elements on a bibliographic record or stored in a database).
Information, on the other hand, adds context through relationships between data, and possibly other information (Example: a complete bibliographic record or records retrieved in a catalog).
Knowledge is the type of information that is understood, interpreted, evaluated and structured (packaged) based on a meaningful pattern (Example: a classified bibliography or a critical literature review).
